Our Story

In 2003 I had a dream to provide an environment whereby young ones could be nurtured, educated and cherished in a loving environment by friendly, qualified and experienced practitioners.

KingsWood Day Nurseries came alive in 2004 with the nursery school in Alderholt opening it’s doors to the village and surrounding communities.

The passion that we all have is recognised in our Outstanding Ofsted report and winning Dorset Business Awards 2014 for Customer Services.
The philosophy of KingsWood “where becoming an achiever is inevitable” is echoed throughout the nursery each day. Children govern their own learning following the Early Years Foundation Stage. Children can venture outdoors in all weathers slipping on their rain coats and wellies, or sunglasses and sunhats, stepping outdoors into our vast outdoor environment.

My son Euan is now 8 and since having a very "outdoorsy" boy KingsWood has followed in Euan's footsteps more and more.

Watching Euan enjoying the simple things in life, such as climbing trees and splashing through streams I soon realised that these wonders of the world should be available to all children, playing and exploring in a safe and exciting learning environment, free of the pressures of growing up to quickly and using the latest IT equipment. All of which comes later in life.

We do not have masses of fancy expensive plastic resources at KingsWood, however we have cardboard boxes that ignite imaginations and we have tables that can be tipped upside down and used as a boat. My youngest son Ciaran, is under 1 and thrives in the love and care which he receives from the specially chosen, naturally caring practitioners.

Children at KingsWood  govern their own learning, through taking advantage of the wide experiences KingsWood can offer from free flow indoor/outdoor play, vast playrooms, dance programmes, Forest field sessions or nature nurture/Forest School in the woodlands. The list in endless!

We have a cosy yurt on our field where the children can warm up round our log burner after a busy morning digging in our mud pit or playing in our fairy gardens. We are home to calming fish in our Ducklings room as well as Pippa the Kingfisher hamster. The children love caring for the animals especially feeding our hamster treats! Woodpeckers have a huge fascination in their "pet snails" and stick insects.

At KingsWood there is a suitable balance of child initiated and adult led learning practice.

Feedback from our most recent Outstanding Ofsted report included; "Staff understand the importance of what makes each child unique. Children receive the warmest of welcomes when they arrive and become immediately engaged in purpose activities. The manager and staff team are highly motivated to ensure every child makes excellent progress. Children are extremely well behaved and caring towards one another. They are developing excellent skills in learning how to be healthy. Snacks and mealtimes offer healthy, nutritious foods."
